Description:

A printed picture of terraced vineyards forms the March page of the Cyprus Calendar (1950). The picture portrays the fertile earth in the Cyprus countryside terraced by the villagers to hold vines. The area must be in the Limassol district where the wine producing villages exist. In the gender division of labour found in rural Cyprus, sowing was an exclusively male activity. In the procreation metaphors employed by Greek Cypriots, the ‘seed’ (sporos) is identified with men while a woman’s womb is likened to the fertile soil.
