Description:

Caterina Cornaro returned to Venice in 1489 having abdicated from her throne of Cyprus. As portrayed in the engraving she was received in Venice with honors of a Queen. Dressed in white and seated under a canopy, the queen is welcomed by the inhabitants of the city in St. Mark’s square. The Bucentaur, the galley which transported her to Venice is moored in front of the square festively decorated. The statue of the lion of St. Mark’s looms over the whole picture while standards of the Republic are being flown everywhere. People overhang from the balconies of the Palazzo Ducale while masses have gathered in the square to see and welcome the queen. This depiction is based on a painting by Carl Werner 1865 which portrays the same square but during the departure of Caterina Cornaro.
