St. Hilarion

Creator:

Legge, Arthur J., 1859-1942

Date:

ca.1928

Description:

The mountain of St. Hilarion was also called Didymous because of its twin peaks. The artist chose to stand between the two peaks and portray the view from that point down to the shore. This view did not only inspire artists but also writers such as Sir Harry Luke who quotes Euripides: «… εκεί χάριτες, εκεί δε πόθος » ‘… And there are the Graces, And there is Desire.’ (Bacchae, II, 400).
