Description:

Very near the necropolis of Salamis is the monastery of St. Barnabas. The legend has it that the body of St. Barnabas was discovered at the location with the gospel of St. Matthew on his chest. Archbishop Anthemios of Cyprus presented these to emperor Zeno (474-491) who, in return, bestowed upon the Church of Cyprus a status of autocephaly. According to this status the Archbishop of Cyprus enjoys the privilege of holding an imperial sceptre, signing in red ink and wearing a red mantel. The legend constitutes the foundation myth of an independent Orthodox Church in Cyprus. The monastery, built in the 18th century, includes the tomb of the saint with a small chapel built above it and depicted in the fresco on the right of the church. Presently the monastery is used as an icon museum.
