Description:

Gladys Emma Peto was an English artist, fashion designer and illustrator. She married Cuthbert Lindsay Emmerson of the Royal Army medical Corps and, during the 1920’s, she travelled with him to Malta, Cyprus and Egypt. An outcome of her travels was the book ‘Malta and Cyprus’ and ‘The Egypt of the Sojourner’ published by J.M. Dent for the Outward Bound Library. In her art deco style, she was clearly influenced by Aubrey Beardsley. The main street of Limassol town is St Andrews street, framed with two-storied houses with overhanging balconies. The street, which is the main shopping area, is frequented by all sorts of people, Greek and Turkish Cypriots carrying on with their everyday chores. Men, women, children and animals enliven the scene. Typical is the hen, held by the woman on the right hand side of the picture, which almost has the role of a pet, just as the dog is a pet to the children. There is a sense of mockery directed by the artist towards the locals here. A peddler is audaciously trying to convince the woman to buy some of his apples, in almost a caricature pose. Further down the street is the hanoum. The Turkish lady is covered from top to bottom in line with the Turkish custom of decency. Yet her figure, drawn in elegant lines by the artist, appears almost inviting.
