Printed below the image: Scene from "Othello" at the Princess theatre: the town and harbour of Cyprus- see page 500
Description:
In a completely imaginary scene presenting the harbour of Famagusta, the Moor Othello and his wife Desdemona appear surrounded by figures dressed in Venetian costume and a line of soldiers. The engraving illustrates the efforts of the British government to raise interest in Cyprus among the British public and legitimise its presence on the island. Following the first decades of British rule, literary, musical and theatrical productions related to Cyprus were revived in an attempt to publicise the importance and the merits of the island as well as to stress its links with the West. Shakespeare’s Othello acts as a bridge between the island of Cyprus and English literary heritage.
