Description:

This engraving portrays Richard I, the Lionheart, King of England, who conquered Cyprus in 1191. Having taken offence at the treatment with which the then ruler of Cyprus Isaac Komnenos handled Berengaria and Joanna, the king’s fiancé and sister, Richard landed on the island with his troops and defeated its ruler. He was on his way to the Holy Land. Upon his return, he sold Cyprus to the Hospitallers and subsequently gave it to his friend and supporter Guy de Lusignian who had lost his kingdom of Jerusalem. It is believed that Richard married Berengaria in Limassol who remains the only queen of England crowned outside the British isles.
