Rahat

Creator:

Ioannides, Renos

Date:

ca. 1930

Places:

[s.l.]

Description:

The word rahat in Turkish means comfortable. It denotes an attitude of ease, comfort and inactiveness. The Turk in his traditional costume is seated on a chair totally inactive leaning against the wall. He is so given to inertia that a dog is sleeping under his chair with no fear of being hurt. The sitter’s face is relaxed, his eyes closed and his hands resting over his belly. Nothing seems to disturb him. The artist has successfully captured that very moment of relaxation. The identification of the state of rahat with a native Turk is expressive of the logic of Orientalism. The drawing also appears as a postcard.
