Paphos port

Creator:

Yeralis, Apostolos (1886-1983)

Date:

1911

Description:

One of the most prolific painters of Greece, Yeralis started his career as a teacher of art at the Pancyprian Gymnasium in Nicosia in 1909-1911. He was then awarded a scholarship to further his studies in Paris at the Julian Academy. To begin with, he was a landscape artist and topographer but then developed into an ethnographer depicting everyday life in Greece through the use of the same wax models. The view in the oil painting is an early aspect of Paphos harbour and castle. The shore is empty with only the Ottoman castle at its edge, a complete contrast of the overcrowding of today. A goat is seeking to graze on the barren rocks. Yeralis has rendered a beautiful combination of shades of pink and blue in his depiction of the sunset. While in Cyprus, the artist was often short of money and exchanged his paintings for foodstuff from the grocers.
