Ottoman Script

Creator:

Kandulu, Arife

Date:

1999-02--22

Places:

[s.l.]

Description:

A series of three water colours in primarily shades of blue and beige expose shapes of leaves and flora which are superimposed with strong Ottoman script. The painter transposes a traditional Ottoman motif on a quintessentially modernist setting by paying due respect to the rules of Ottoman décor that dictates absence of figurative subjects. In a rather introspective way, she seeks to bridge the Ottoman past and the modern present as contours of her identity.
