Description:

Jacques Georges Desmeules came from Switzerland to Cyprus following an archaeological mission. He married Renee Zirigovich and taught French at the American Academy in Larnaca and in Limassol. He was as prolific in his painting as in his writings about the island. His pastel drawing depicts a village woman wearing an open collar blue dress and a loose kerchief. Both point to a middle aged woman rather than an elderly one. Her cracked face is marked by the hardships of life. Rural women on the island were heavily involved in manual work. They often worked in the fields, as noted by many travelers.
