Description:

The Melkonian Institute was founded in 1924 as an Armenian boarding school of high academic standard. It was a safe haven for three hundred orphans from eastern Anatolia and the neighbouring countries fleeing the Armenian genocide. It was founded by Krikor and Garabet Melkonian. The campus is a grove of cypress trees and other indigenous plants planted by the orphan students in memory of those perished during the genocide. Water wells were drilled in the area and water was drawn by Canadian windmills to meet the needs of the campus. In 1974, the Melkonian grounds were bombed by the Turkish airforce. By 1986, the buildings were fully restored. The school was officially closed in June 2005. The watercolour is of a distant view of the campus emphasizing the dense vegetation from the middle of which rises the building.
