Date:

Description:

This is a copy of a medieval map of Nicosia of the 16th century which presents the siege of the capital by the Ottomans. Nicosia is presented as a heavily fortified town. Surrounding the walls is the military camp of the Ottomans signified by the typical tall conical shaped tents. Ottoman military figures are preparing for battle. The town within the walls is embellished with churches and in the middle stands the cathedral of St. Sophia. Pedieos river approaches the town from the west and the east but is not depicted crossing the town. The Venetians, in view of the Ottoman attack, and for security measures had diverted the route of the river to bypass the town.
