Description:

Major General Sir Matthew William Edward Gosset entered the army in 1856, fought in Egypt, Burma, India the Zulu and Boer war and travelled extensively in the Middle East 1870-1892. His watercolours come from an album which he compiled of scenes from India, the Middle East and Scotland between 1873 and1891. This is a picture of the Limassol seafront with the Troodos mountains developing in the background. The artist exhibits great meticulousness and attention to detail in achieving a very realistic representation of the mountains and the buildings on the shore. The watercolour has as its focal point the pier which is being approached by a number of boats. The masts of the boats and the minaret of Cami Kebir protrude over the town.
