Description:

A romantic view of Kyrenia Gate or Proveditore after the proveditore Francesco Barbaro.The gate was one of the three on the walls of Nicosia leading into the town and next to the Barbaro Bastion. It was repaired by the Turks in 1821 , a square chamber added above it and a large panel with verses from the Koran above the doorway. In 1932 the British cut the walls left and right of the gate to allow for two roads to lead traffic in and out of the city. The watercolor was obviously made before 1932.
