Inscribed in lower left recto: Cyprus 1879

Description:

London Landscapes painter and watercolourist, Ellis worked at the District and Metropolitan Railways as an engineer and then embarked on extensive travels to the Eastern Mediterranean from where he was inspired in his work as an artist. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New Watercolour Society and the Grosvenor Gallery. He painted about 80 watercolours of Cyprus which in 1879 he exhibited at the Belgian Gallery in London. He spent a few months in Cyprus end of 1878-beginning of 1879 and travelled all over the island. This watercolour portrays the back part of the Kyrenia castle with an extensive view of the valley and the mountain range behind. The town lies within the valley and in 1978/79 appears to be just a small fishing village. The castle appears robust and well-preserved.
