Description:

Gladys Emma Peto was an English artist, fashion designer and illustrator. She married Cuthbert Lindsay Emmerson of the Royal Army medical Corps and, during the 1920’s, she travelled with him to Malta, Cyprus and Egypt. An outcome of her travels was the book ‘Malta and Cyprus’ and ‘The Egypt of the Sojourner’ published by J.M. Dent for the Outward Bound Library. In her art deco style, she was clearly influenced by Aubrey Beardsley. The artist’s female approach to monuments becomes apparent in this picture. Women artists in general appear to have concentrated on the landscape and people, and when they did represent monuments, these were depicted in a manner different from that of male artists. Just like the landscape the monument is domesticated by the female artist and is incorporated into a more familiar human setting. Moreover, the girl at the painting’s focal point underlines the artist’s subtle commentary on the hybrid nature of female dress in Cyprus. The girl’s headscarf compliments an essentially western dress as it was the norm among many Cypriot women at the time.
