Inscribed on verso: House in Nicosia, Cyprus. Anne Steele. 14 Weston House, Winchester Avenue NW6 Oil 22 guineas

Description:

This oil depicts a house in Nicosia that manifests the hybrid nature of a construction which combines elements from three eras. The yellow sandstone and archway allude to masonry of the Lusignian period, the window shutters and kiosk smack of Ottoman styles while the iron railings together with the zinc roof of the balcony testify to modern additions. The external staircase is a typical Cypriot addition.
