Description:

William Robert Collyer arrived in Cyprus in 1884 and was appointed British delegate to Evkaf. He was made Queen’s Advocate in 1885 and took up Warren’s defense in the Frangissa trial in 1885. He was an amateur artist who spent much time in summer in the Troodos mountains where the British administration used to move in order to avoid the heat of the plains. The view is of Government Cottage in Troodos which looks like a cottage in the British countryside. The Union Jack denotes the British presence on the island in the early years of colonial rule. The British had already raised the first colonial architecture in Cyprus and made orderly adjustments to the areas surrounding the new buildings. The attempt to graft one culture upon another persisted in architecture until well into the 20th century.
