Description:

Ann Villiers was the daughter of Governor Sir William Haynes Smith (1898-1904). She lived in Government House. This watercolour is perhaps the only work of art portraying Government House as it originally was, a wooden construction built in 1878. It was surrounded by covered verandas to provide shade as it stood exposed on top of a hill in the outskirts of Nicosia. It was a pre-fabricated building sent from England to accommodate the High Commissioner and his chief officers. The land around Government House was planted with various kinds of trees including orchards of lemon and orange trees, palm tree alleys and many eucalyptus trees imported by the British from Australia in an effort to drain the swamps of Cyprus.
