Inscriptions:

Inscribed on verso: Jall Hyller 1966, ? Dodhus 1967

Description:

The work of art is totally abstract and in the cubist manner. Lines form squares and rectangles on a pure white background. The work was executed in 1964, when inter-communal troubles had already erupted on the island leading to ethnic segregation. The Turkish community had withdrawn into enclaves. The city of Famagusta though had been divided into two parts since 1957: The Turkish quarter was defined by the walls of the city while the Greek part expanded outside the walls. The vertical bar demarcating the two parts of the square and the bars crossing through that demarcation might reflect on the town’s ethnic division and crossings respectively.
