Description:

Major General Sir Matthew William Edward Gosset entered the army in 1856, fought in Egypt, Burma, India, the Zulu and Boer war and travelled extensively in the Middle East 1870-1892. His watercolours come from an album which he compiled of scenes from India, the Middle East and Scotland between 1873-1891. The picture is of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in the background, framed by palm trees on either side. The church of St. George Exilir, with its famous roundel window above its entrances, stands in the foreground. Both Gothic monuments lay in the walled city of Famagusta which, in 1889, was hardly inhabited. Most part of it was grazing fields for sheep and goats.
