Description:

Tristram Ellis was a professional artist who came to Cyprus in 1878 and stayed for a few months with the aim of portraying the new British acquisition for the British public. He published a book titled Twelve Etchings of the Principal Views and Places of Interest in Cyprus (1879). While on the island, he executed more than eighty watercolours of Cyprus which he then exhibited at the Belgian Gallery in London. The view is of the Latin Cathedral of St Nicholas (Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque) from the back. Ruins of what is commonly thought to be monastic cells can be discerned in the foreground. Furthermore, the Bishop’s chapel is also visible. A group of four British soldiers attests to the presence of the British on the island and dates the picture after 1878. They seem to be on patrol, marching on a mud path road which links the sea shore with the main square of the city known today as Liman Yolu. Two locals and an animal appear moving in the opposite direction towards the soldiers; thus adding a touch of life to an otherwise still environment as well as signifying a non-problematic co-habitation between troops and villagers.
