Inscribed: Excavations near Larnaca Tristram Ellis

Description:

Tristram Ellis was a professional artist who came to Cyprus in 1878 and stayed for a few months with the aim of portraying the new British acquisition for the British public. He published a book titled Twelve Etchings of the Principal Views and Places of Interest in Cyprus (1879). While on the island, he executed more than eighty watercolours of Cyprus which he then exhibited at the Belgian Gallery in London. The view is of Larnaca, probably near Kition where many antiquarians chose to excavate throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A large white tent is set up under a tree to function as the archaeological office. On the left hand side, a seated man in white is probably the director of the excavations supervising local workers who are busily labouring under the hot sun. A few goats graze in the foreground, probably the dinner of the next few weeks.
