Description:
The archaeologist Ruth Barwell concentrated primarily on copying frescoes from Byzantine churches and taking rubbings from antique fragments and tombstones. This watercolour was probably done during her free time and at her own pleasure. It depicts Saint Hilarion Castle from the Kyrenia lowlands covered with olive groves. The scene becomes almost bucolic with the inclusion of the shepherd and his flock. The colours used are typical of those always employed to portray the century old olive trees of Cyprus. The wild and thick vegetation appears to hold back its own secrets, allowing only a distant view of the peak of St. Hilarion.
