Description:

The Illustrated London News sent special artists to portray the island of Cyprus in 1878. It also used sketches by military personnel based on the island in order to introduce the new acquisition to the British public. Samuel Passfield Oliver reports on his visit to the monastery of Kantara whose cloisters are depicted here. The figure who appears in the foreground is referred to by Oliver as the visiting priest of Ilion, a neighbouring village which appears nowhere on the map of Cyprus. The figure in the background is the monastery’s only inhabitant, a monk whom Oliver describes as ‘rugged and dirty’. [Illustrated London News]. To the British correspondent, the monastery’s chapel appeared ‘in repair, and its interior is curious to a certain extent from its intense squalor and poverty stricken appearance’ [pp. 350].
