Church and aqueduct

Creator:

Frere, Gwendolen, 1872-1950

Date:

1901

Description:

Gwendolen Frere was the daughter of Judge Bertle Frere who arrived in 1897 and took up judicial duty in the British administration of Cyprus. She was an amateur artist who executed a series of watercolours of Nicosia and Kyrenia. This watercolour, painted probably in Nicosia, portrays what looks like a stone bridge but is, in fact, part of the Silahtar aqueduct. It ends into what was known as djoudjou, the local Nicosian name for cisterns that were used as water depos in every neighbourhood and from which women collected water. The cistern looks more like a chapel with its dome covered by local red tiles.
