Description:

Jacques Wagrez studied at the École des Beaux Arts under Farochon, Pils and Henri Lehmann, the two latter of whom most influenced him. Chiefly known for his pictures of Venetian and Florentine life in the fifteenth century, his works are remarkable for their fidelity in all details to the period represented. The architecture, costumes and figures are drawn in the utmost skill and are pleasant to the eye. The imaginative painting portrays the last moments of Caterina as Queen of Cyprus. Standing in front of her throne under a golden canopy, probably after the celebration of a solemn mass of the Holy Spirit (Carnival Thursday) in the palace or the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Famagusta, she is handing over her crown to the Venetian admiral Francis Priuli. The scene depicts a mixture of cultural elements: the lamp appears to be of the Greek tradition, as is the painting in the alcove and the architectural style of the columns; the carpet is oriental and the figures are dressed in Venetian costumes. Exhibited at the Salon in 1905; Château in the region of Reims.
