Inscribed on label verso: From EWB no. 73 (306) Titian. Portrait of Catharine Cowan Queen of Cyprus in yellow dress holding an apple
Description:
Caterina Cornaro is presented in her later age as a mature woman holding an apple. There is an allusion to Aphrodite through the apple she is holding in her hand. It is believed that the painting is not painted by Titian but probably by Bellini. Caterina is not wearing a crown, indicating that the painting represents her after her abdication and while in Asolo.
