Description:

This is an imaginary oil painting of Queen Caterina of Cyprus inspecting the fortifications of the town of Famagusta obviously after the death of her husband (1473). In front of the Queen an engineer is displaying the designs for the tower standing behind them while a number of workers are busy with their chores. The Queen is escorted by a Lady in waiting and protected by her guards. In her regal posture, the Queen appears fully engaged in the construction process while her outstretched hand suggests that she is giving orders. The background of the picture intends to convey the massive scale of the town and of the fortification project. The artist uses a combination of colours whereby the red and white contrast strongly with the darker background. The whole painting has an air of the Romantic era.
