Bellapais

Creator:

Pearce, Arnold

Date:

ca.1935

Description:

Set in the slopes of the Kyrenia mountains and looming over the small village of Bellapais stands the Abbey de la Paix. The watercolour portrays the landscape as was in the thirties whereby nothing was built around the area. The Abbey was surrounded by olive and cypress trees. The romantic aspect is achieved through a combination of soft colours reflecting the grayish silver foliage of the olive orchards and the darker green of the upright cypresses which compete with the heights of the Abbey. The mountains in the background and the steep cliff in the foreground seem to be framing the focal point of the picture on a stage.
