Bazaar

Creator:

Legge, Arthur J., 1859-1942

Date:

1928

Description:

This watercolour provides a view of a corner of a bazaar consisting of a number of shabby buildings and makeshift arrangements, all covered by matting. Stalls selling fruits and vegetables give a colourful dimension to the watercolour while the diversity of the crowd attests to the ethnic and religious pluralism of Cyprus. Greeks and Turks, defined by their clothing and headdresses, mingled casually in public domains such as the market. The peaceful interaction between the two communities on the island is prevalent in the painting. This was not to last for long. Due to inter-communal conflict, the two communities segregated into their own public spaces including separate municipal markets. The watercolour is a strong example of the perseverance of ‘orientalist’ projections of Cyprus. They attest to the fact that, as late as 1928, the British were looking for the exotic and the picturesque.
