Description:

Alfonse Gamotis is an American artist probably visiting Cyprus at a young age. The two miniatures portray seaside views of Cyprus. The one on the right, depicts a turbe, a Moslem tomb, on the Avdimou bay in the Limassol district. In 1426, the Mameluks landed at Avdimou bay and from there on, moved and attacked Limassol. In later centuries, and probably in 1571, two Moslem fighters died at the bay where they were buried. The Turkish Cypriots revered the tomb and, during drought, gathered round it to pray for rain. The location depicted in the second miniature is unidentifiable.
