Exhibition opening: Tradition Re-Imagined

The Centre of Visual Arts & Research in collaboration with the JELO6 Project Cyprus, invites artists working in the fields of jewellery, ceramics, and object-making to participate in Tradition Reimagined — a unique exhibition exploring Cypriot history through contemporary artistic lenses.

Tradition Re-Imagined invites artists and viewers to explore how garments have long acted as storytellers of Cypriot society — silent yet powerful markers of identity, class, and resistance.

From the richly layered saya and Ottoman bindalli that once signalled status, to the tailored European silhouettes adopted during British rule, clothing has shaped and reflected the island’s social evolution. Far more than adornment, dress became a visual language through which Cypriots expressed belonging, aspiration, and dissent.

This exhibition aims to bring to life these relics of the past as dynamic cultural artefacts through contemporary visions and creations. By placing traditional garments and contemporary responses side by side, Tradition Re-Imagined highlights Cyprus’ local heritage.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until 16 November.
Visiting hours: 9:30-17:00
