If you walk in the shed behind St Lazarus church in Larnaca, you will see the tombstone of the twin children of the American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease. One of the twins, his little girl, died on 2 December:

Lucinda who has for some time had diarrhoea followed by a swelling of the face, hands and feet, is today worse than ever and passes much blood. She probably cannot live long. I have for some time feared this result but have not been disposed to despair until today. It now seems to me she is past hope. She has suddenly lost her strength and since the swelling has diminished she looks more emaciated and death-like than ever. Poor little thing. She will soon join her brother. And will this dispensation of Providence be blessed to us and others?
