The photographs in this collection are part of an extensive body of works by the photographer Edmond Torikian which includes thousands of individual images taken mainly in Cyprus. Torikian, one of the founders of the Cyprus Photographic Society, was a professional photographer whose works include advertising and promotional material, public events, celebrations and ceremonies, as well as, more personal photographs of friends, family and daily life in Cyprus between the 1950s and 1970s.
This particular selection entitled, Edmond Torikian Collection - Bristol Britannia Air Crash, includes 42 black and white images depicting the multi-faith funeral for the victims of the Bristol Britannia plane crash that happened in Nicosia on 20 of April 1967. The images also depict the plane wreckage in situ in Lakatamia. The pilot of the plane, because of bad weather conditions and low visibility that night, requested permission to land in Nicosia Airport but the plane crashed on a hill just a few kilometres from the airport. From the plane crash only 4 people survived.
The images that comprise the online collection were reproduced from the original roll films. The titles were taken from inscriptions when available. Where no inscriptions were available the titles were generated by the cataloguer describing the depicted subject.
