The photographs in this collection are part of an extensive body of works by the photographer Edmond Torikian which includes thousands of individual images taken mainly in Cyprus. Torikian, one of the founders of the Cyprus Photographic Society, was a professional photographer whose works include advertising and promotional material, public events, celebrations and ceremonies, as well as, more personal photographs of friends, family and daily life in Cyprus between the 1950s and 1970s.
This particular selection entitled Edmond Torikian Collection – Religious Architecture, includes 76 black and white and colour images depicting religious buildings around the island of Cyprus. These include churches, mosques, tekkes and monasteries as well as monks, priests and other religious figures.
The images that comprise the online collection were reproduced from the original roll films. The titles were taken from inscriptions when available. Where no inscriptions were available the titles were generated by the cataloguer describing the depicted subject.
