Did you know? Dinner service

When the first High Commissioner, Sir Garnet Wolseley, came to Cyprus, he wanted to give dinner parties to meet the notables of the island. He asked to buy a large dinner service but there was nothing to be found in Cyprus. The Cypriots were using tin plates or bowls. So, Wolseley ordered a dinner service from England and asked that it be decorated with the birds of Larnaca Salt Lake. A blue and white dinner service arrived soon, with not exactly the feathered species found in Larnaca but close enough.

The ‘Did You Know’ series is made possible with the support of OPAP (Cyprus) and the Active Citizens Fund.
