USA ambassador Taylor Belcher sent to the Secretary of State the following report:

Derick came in to have early lunch with us. Toby had call from Nicosia saying a British policeman was shot dead on Ledra Street at half past nine this morning. This was less than an hour after the eight Geuneyli Turks were freed of murder charges. We heard two o’clock news and could hardly believe it! How could they not convict them. Derick merely said that the only thing he felt was that the judge, Boyle, was as unbiased as possible since he’s an Irishman newly arrived. Who knows!
