The chronicler Leontios Macheras describes how Bulgarians helped the Cypriots defend Kyrenia castle:

On the twenty seventh of February after Christ Sit John Perot received orders from the constable and the prince, to take Bulgarians and keep guard outside Lefcosia to harass the Genoese. And when the Genoese heard the message sent to them from the siege camp at Kyrenia, that they should either send them victuals from Famagusta, or if they did not that they would abandon their position, they sent them fifty camels laden with food and equipment. And on the twenty eighth of February when they were come to the Defile, the Bulgarians attacked and seized the convoy and carried it off to St Hilarion: only five camels escaped, who happened to be behind the rest. The Bulgarians drove off and killed the Genoese. And as was their wont, on the same day they made a violent attack on Kyrenia, and by the power of god the Cypriots had the better of it, and the Genoese retired in great confusion. And on the same day they sent the king back to Famagusta by night with the admiral.
