The American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease took some notes on the ebb and flow of the tide in Larnaca:

I observed on my return home that the sea retired considerably and appears to be a foot lower than it was last fall when the Constitution was here, I have noticed it several days. The new moon came in on Saturday 24th, I asked Mr Savva his opinion about the cause. He thought it might be occasioned by the north wind; no one seems to have observed anything about it. He says there is a bar out between the shore and the vessels, which it is difficult for the lighters to pass over, when the tide is out. There is a daily tide in Venice and Trieste, I have not observed it elsewhere.
