The American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease noted in his diary:
Today the Greeks are visiting from hours; it is a festival, of what kind I know not. I and Lucinda went out to the future in –laws of Mr. Grollo our host, or rather his mother in law, for the father was beheaded by the Turks. We also made a call on another family in the neighbourhood. We received a call from the intended father in law of Pierides who is able to speak several languages. He is very gentlemanly in his appearance and appeared very kind. Pierides has promised to take us to visit some of the families on Christmas, which will take place in about two weeks according to the Greek method of computation.
