The American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease commented upon his arrival to Cyprus:

I saw a man today engaged in ploughing on shore, who had in his hand a long stick with which he kept his cattle in motion and thought of the words of our Lord to Saul of Tarsus: ‘It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks’. I suppose that tomorrow we shall be pained by seeing the Sabbath violated. The owner will probably continue to take in his cargo as on any other day. Yesterday, Lucinda and I went ashore and walked about, picking up stones and shells. She received evident benefit.
