Sir Garnet Wolseley writes in his journal about Abbot Sophronios:

The old abbot of this monastery is a nice fellow: he presents me with a bouquet every morning containing jessamin, sweet-smelling verbena, sweet- geranium etc etc. I have given him a packet of eycalyptus seeds to plant, and I have a lot more which I shall plant as soon as I am settled somewhere. I had sent Maquay to examine an old ruined monastery near Kyrenia: he returned last night and I went over his report of it. I shall be able to put Head Quarters and six companies of 42nd there and shall send them round there as soon as possible.
