One can distinguish the Britishness of Rupert Gunnis, ADC to Sir Ronald Storrs, even in insignificant notes in his diary:

HE, ladies and I to watch the football match, the English School vs the American School in the moat, a very good match, the former won amid vast enthusiasm. In the evening to dine with Canon Newham at his school, with the masters and the boys and then to listen to the debate between three boys of the English School and three of the American School on compulsory education. The English school were against compulsory education and I was one of the judges and voted for the ES who won, much to the fury and the annoyance of the Americans.
