Lt Colonel Donisthorpe Donne described in his diary the Queen’s birthday in Cyprus:

The next great event at Nicosia was the Queen’s Birthday, for which the Zaptiehs and Troopers had to be drilled up a day or two in advance. I had about 30 Troopers as escort to the Vali, and two Companies of Infantry as a guard in front of the Konak. I rode out with the Commissioner and Bor in full uniform to meet H.E. outside the Papho Gate and quite a procession was formed to the Konak. After a reception of the Greeks and Turks the proceedings terminated. I dined with Bor and rode out afterwards to the Reception at Government House which like most of its kind was a very stiff affair.
