In a telegram to the Secretary of State, US Consul General Taylor Belcher reported on media reactions to the Zurich agreement:
Zurich agreement dominates all newspapers as to terms under which the new “Republic” will operate. Times of Cyprus reports McGhee trip to Athens and Ankara responsible for successful meeting between Prime Ministers of Greece and Turkey. He reported as stating “Let us extract poison from Greek-Turk relations. No progress can be made until this is done.” Ethnos reflects optimism over Zurich conference but in contrast to Times of Cyprus gives us no credit referring to “scandalous pro Turkish attitude of Dept. Of State”
