13 November 1923: Rose Jackson Everett, wife of the Skouriotissa Mines director, in a letter to her sister described her shopping weekend in Cyprus.
“I can give quite a few orders in Greek now and read some Greek but reading is hard for the characters are so queer looking. I am studying French too.
There are two horses in the stable and I can use them when I want to. I am trying out the tamest one first. The children have a good donkey they ride every day. They also have a cute little pig which Charlie bought for them when we were in Nicosia last Sunday. We drove to Nicosia Saturday a.m. and came back Sunday p.m. We would not choose Sunday morning for shopping but that was the only time we could go with Miss Lidia who goes on week-ends. I do wish I could give you a good description of our Christmas shopping. The bazaar, name of shopping district, is made of tiny shops along very narrow streets where oxen, camels, cabs and people go. It takes an age to barter with the shop keeper for each item you buy. You will all understand that there is not much choice but everything I bought is made on the island. It is especially hard to buy anything for men.”
