The portrait of Colonel Hugh M. Sinclair (1855-1924) as a young officer was probably painted by his sister. He was a distinguished career soldier, A.D.C. to Sir Garnet Wolseley, Governor of Cyprus. He served in India, Russia, the Boer War and the Great War. After participating in the Ashanti War in West Africa (1895-96), he returned home with a throne upholstered in human skin. The bust watercolour of Col. Sinclair is typical of military postures adopted by men in uniform. Col. Sinclair is the author of the book ‘Camp and Society’ (Chapman and Hall, 1926) and an amateur artist. He was the engineer of the first Government House in Nicosia.
