Description:

Kyrenia artist John Sabry delivered a map of Cyprus with cartouches referring to the history of the island. On the lower right corner, Sabry paints the coat of arms of Jerusalem, the Lusugnians and Armenia, and all together depicted in the coat of arms of Cyprus. In the sea, Aphrodite appears in a shell drawn by a dolphin to the shores of the island. The red flags on sailing ships allude to the Ottoman fleet. On the upper left corner, Sabry lists the historical periods of the island with dates. Within the map of Cyprus, numerous small designs and features provide a commentary on the island. They range from flags on top of mountains signifying castles to villagers labouring the land suggesting an agricultural society. The figure of a soldier riding his horse signifies military presence on the island whereas at the easternmost tip of the Karpass peninsula the depiction of a monastery (Ap. Andreas) testifies to the Christian element on the island. The map was made for tourist purposes and as a souvenir of Cyprus.
